Electronic Data Capture in Mobile Devices:

Mobile devices such as PDAs and Smartphones as useful tools for data capture in complete electronic CRFs, not only as patient diaries. Mobile devices are validated tools for data capture that can contain dozens of patients and visits and thousands of different variables, with the same functionalities as web-based EDC, but with improved usability.

Sometimes web-based EDC imply double transcription workload for the investigator (from source data to paper draft, and from paper to the web). Site staff are primary users of EDC, yet focus to date has been on developing ‘user friendly systems’ but only from the sponsor / vendor perspective.

One of the possibilities demanded by investigators for enhancing EDC satisfaction is the use of mobile hardware for data entry, like PDAs, Palms, or SmartPhones containing complete case report forms
